Stop That Cart! by wbd Stop That Cart! by wbd
What nefarious deeds must Shiori, noble guard of the Rockhall market be stopping?

Well, none, really. What happened is that someone tied their cart to a market stall, instead of a tie post. The cart started to roll away and nearly pulled the stall down. Shiori, thinking quickly, drew her sword and cut the rope. Now she has to chase the cart and later on admonish the owner. Happens every couple weeks or so.

Art Notes:

I felt like drawing a bit of an "alt universe" version of Shiori the Mall Security Officer (one of my original characters). I drew this in Paint Tool SAI.

Also, I wanted to draw a bit of an action picture, but exaggerated. I had a look at one of Preston Blair's books on animation, and in it was a bunch of neat run and walk cycles (viewed from the side). I decided to pick a keyframe and draw something similar, but from a different angle (as Shiori is much less cartoonish in proportions than the figures shown in the book), and also with a somewhat exaggerated perspective.

Is that Alternate Universe the world of Chivalry XD ?

Probably not- Chivalry as commonly understood emerged a bit later than the Norman period, if I'm reading my history correctly. What I drew was middle ages, but maybe with some modern conveniences.

Just checkin'...just that I heard the term 'Stop that cart!' in a Medieval thing and the first thing that came to mind was a class-based FPS game XD....which Chivalry is. Then I realized that you could just be stopping a regular medieval cart. Whoops.

Explosives were in short supply back then. I suppose they could hire a few peasants to shout "boom" really loud.

Neat concept, and Shiori looks cute in 11th century Norman attire.

The perspective looks a little weird in places. In particular, Shiori's left shoulder and breast look a lot smaller than her right, even though they should be closer to the viewer. Her shield also looks off: The visible parts don't seem to be meaningfully connected to each other behind her back.

Other than that, I like this picture. It's dynamic and fun. Shiori's garb looks very authentic. The close and distant background elements have enough detail to be interesting; they add a lot to the piece without distracting from the main focus.

Thank-you for the comment- I made a few tweaks to the image based on it. My original plan with the kite shield was to have it "pinched" a bit at the waist, but since that makes it look disconnected, I changed it to a more standard look. Shiori's left shoulder should be a bit further back from the viewer (admittedly this angle is rather tricky to represent), so I adjusted the lines a bit there.

I'm glad you liked the pic! I figured I'd go with a bit of historical consistency in the image. In addition to the byrnie and kite shield, she's got a Type V sword, based on the hilt and pommel (well, mostly- a bit of flair).

I have a sword just like that!

A nice picture. An interesting concept and the action pose turned out very good.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!

Who made your sword? I went with a Type V for the primary design, as it seemed to suit the feel of the scene well.

The sword was from Museum Replicas. They don't carry that model any more, but I happen to have a photo in my dA gallery: [link]

Maybe not exactly the same, but very similar.

Looks good to me! And yes, it's a slightly different design, but close enough. The two closest blades to the one I drew are probably the Albion Jarl: [link] and Albion Huskarl. Slightly out of most people's budgets, of course.

They do look nice, at least in pictures; I've never seen one in real life though. I was going to apply as an apprentice blade-smith with them once, but they took down the "Employment" section of the website before I got around to submitting my resume.

Heh cart-stopping; kind of like the opposite of what they do in TF2.

The foreshortening looks decent - maybe the arm holding the sword could be more turned in like she's trying to re-sheath it. I do like how it's pointed way out like that (adding to Shiori's goofiness) but it's not helping the overall sense of motion (i.e. the "arc") as much.

Thanks for the comment. I wanted to go with that goofier sort of look, but I'll have to do some thinking in future as to how I could blend it together with the form. Maybe the sense of motion needed to be ruined. Hmm, something new for me to think about.
